Lighting the Way: New Streetlights Installed on Washington for Pedestrian Safety

Thanks to ongoing advocacy from the Beaverton Downtown Association (BDA) and dedicated collaboration with City of Beaverton staff, downtown just got a little brighter—and a lot safer.

Two new streetlights have been installed on Washington between 3rd and 4th Street and another existing light was upgraded on the same side of the street closer to the parking lot driveway to the south. This will help with pedestrian navigation and safety concerns, especially during our darker months. This upgrade was done, primarily, due to BDA advocacy.

This effort was prompted by a report from a downtown business owner following a concerning safety incident in the area. The BDA immediately raised the issue with the City, and thanks to the tireless follow-through of Joe Grear, Mark Noonan, and Keegan Lucas, the lighting improvements were prioritized and implemented swiftly by City staff.

We are deeply grateful for their responsiveness, problem-solving, and continued commitment to a walkable, welcoming, and safe downtown. These improvements may seem small on the surface, but they make a big impact on how people move through and experience our downtown core.

We would also like to thank the many departments, divisions, and people within the City of Beaverton that helped facilitate this needed improvement to Downtown.

This is a great example of how strong relationships, community feedback, and advocacy lead to meaningful change. Your BDA will continue working to ensure downtown remains vibrant, inclusive, and safe for everyone.
